Project co-funded by the European Union

ALMA Sistemi Srl, in cooperation with IRSPS Srl, has been selected by Lazio Innova (the regional agency for innovation of Regione Lazio) for the design and development of advanced and portable instrumentation for rock and sediment dating up to 1 million years.
The proposal by ALMA Sistemi, titled LUMINO, was submitted under the “Bando Aerospazio” competitive call and ranked third out of 28 funded projects. The acronym LUMINO stands for the project’s focus on luminescence dating, a technique that detects, measures and converts into absolute age the radiation dose emitted by the samples. These are illuminated by specific irradiation units to determine their geological history.
The portable instrument being developed under the LUMINO project is based on this luminescence technique and has a wide range of applications:
Planetary exploration, particularly on Mars, where similar instrumentation can be mounted on a rover
Geology and archaeology, for field-based rock and sediment analysis
Radiation dosimetry, for quick response in case of nuclear accidents
This innovative project is co-financed by the European Union and represents a significant step forward in the development of miniaturised, field-ready instruments for both terrestrial and space applications.
